How to Identify, Prevent, and Treat a Migraine Headache

Nobody enjoys a migraine headache. They can ruin a lot of good times in your life if you don’t know how to identify when you are having a migraine, how to prevent the migraine and how to effectively treat the migraine once it has begun. Everyone has a headache every now and then, so what makes a migraine headache any different. The answer may be simple for those who experience migraines very often. Unlike a normal headache, a migraine tends to be a concentrated pain on only one side of the head at a time and is usually centered behind the eye, extending to the side of the head. Sometimes, other symptoms precede the migraine, such as irritability and depression. Migraines are usually accompanied by sensitivity to light, nausea, and, in some cases, vomiting.

Common causes are strenuous activities, straining your eyes for long periods of time, and sleep deprivation. By tracking what causes your migraines, you may be able to prevent future migraine headaches.

While there is no cure for migraines, there are many different treatment options. Some people opt for natural treatments, such as acupuncture, aromatherapy, and taking niacin. For others, over the counter medications tend to control the pain of migraine headaches. Many brands, such as Advil, Excedrin, and Motrin have pain relievers specifically geared towards migraines. These can be found at most any grocery or drugstore. If your migraines are severe, your doctor will want to see you so that he or she may prescribe a stronger, more efficient prescription.
