It is normal to experience pain when you have been injured or are recovering from an injury, but what if the pain doesn’t stop? Whether it is a constant, dull ache or a sharp, shooting pain, it is always there. Many different people are affected by chronic pain. While it is more common in older adults, anyone can be affected by it. Older people tend to have more underlying medical problems, which then leads to the chronic pain later in life. Chronic pain doesn’t seem to target one particular type of person.

It is often hard to diagnose chronic pain, but there are questions your doctor can ask that may narrow it down. Your doctor may ask about any past or current illnesses or health related issues you may have experienced. He may also test your mental alertness as well as state of mind. It is hard to determine exactly where the pain is coming from and test results come back normal in most cases, but nevertheless the pain remains. Just like any other sickness, chronic pain has many different methods of treatment. Since there is not a defined reason for developing chronic pain, treatments will vary according to each individual’s needs. For some, over the counter pain relievers, such as Tylenol, Aleve, or Advil, will do the trick. Others will turn to physical therapy or a more balanced diet. What works for someone else, may not work for you. Keep trying different treatments until you find one that works for you. In some cases, a combination of treatments may be the answer.
